Causes of Heart Disease

Heat disease is a serious health factor for many people.  Sometimes heart disease strikes without warning and with no visible causes.  Other times heart disease seems to be prevalent within a family.  On the other hand, many risk factors have been shown to have a link with heart disease. 

There appears to be a connection between heart disease and smoking.  Smoking can result in hardening of the arteries, which increases the likelihood of heart disease.  In fact, smoking is one of the greatest risks for heart disease.  Arteriosclerosis can result from continued smoking.  When people smoke for years, they have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and other health concerns.

Not being very physically active can also increase a person's chances of heart disease.  Exercise can help to reduce your risk of heart troubles.  In fact, among the many benefits of exercising is the fact that it can improve cardiovascular health.  Not exercising enough can also increase your risk for high blood pressure.  Having high blood pressure that goes untreated can also raise a person's chances of having heart disease at some point in their life. 

People who are overweight also see a rise in the chances that they will have heart disease at some point in their lives.  Obesity itself may not directly cause heart disease, however, it can lead to other conditions that can.  Being overweight can cause high blood pressure and high cholesterol.  Obesity can also lead to diabetes, which at times also brings about heart disease. 

Diabetics have an increased risk of heart disease.  High levels of insulin can result in high blood pressure.  In addition the insulin can cause fat to be deposited within artery walls, which causes even more vascular problems.  A person who is diabetic must carefully follow all medical instructions to help decrease the potential for these further health risks.

Cholesterol problems can lead to heart disease.  There are good types of cholesterol and bad types.  If your numbers of good cholesterol are too low this can cause problems.  Your good cholesterol can often be low, while your bad cholesterol is high.  Good cholesterol helps to prevent the buildup of dangerous cholesterol in your arteries.  If your numbers of good cholesterol are low and your levels of bad cholesterol are high, overtime this can contribute to heart disease. 

Having high cholesterol is one of the leading causes of heart disease.  People who have high cholesterol must work to lower their high levels of bad cholesterol in order to reduce the risk of heart disease.  There can be direct links between high cholesterol and heart disease.  High cholesterol can also result in other risk factors linked with various types of heart disease.  For example, high cholesterol and high blood pressure often go hand and hand.  Therefore a person with high cholesterol and high blood pressure has a higher likelihood of heart disease sometime in their future.

Elevated levels of bad cholesterol also impact the arteries in the body.  Cholesterol can build up and cause hardening of the arteries.  This hardening of the arteries can often lead to stroke or heart disease.  This is another reason as to why it is so important for someone with high cholesterol to work to lower his or her cholesterol to healthy levels. 

Many factors can be considered when looking at heart disease.  Sometimes the cause appears unknown.  Other times, a cause or causes for heart disease seem to be more obvious.  One major factor linked with heart troubles is high cholesterol.  High cholesterol can lead to many other risks that often result in heart disease.  For this reason it is so important to try to prevent high cholesterol.
